Celtic Art: The Methods Of Construction by George Bain (1973)

This is a Dover softcover book, illustrated in black and white with both line drawings and photographs. Topics covered in the book are as follows:
·Knotwork Borders
·Knotwork Panels
·Spirals
·Key Patterns
·Lettering
·Zoomorphics
·Plant Forms
·Human Figures
·Applications of Celtic Art

The examples shown are all really interesting. They include work by notable artists such as Leonardo Da Vinci, Albrecht Durer, Michelangelo and others.

I really love this book! There are so many interesting designs in it, and I love the range of topics that are covered. In my opinion, though, the instructions on how to actually construct your own designs are not the easiest to understand. If you are looking for inspiration, this is a great book! If you are looking for a good how-to, this book will get the job done but expect to spend some time and effort on understanding it.

In my opinion, a better choice for how to draw Celtic knotwork is “How To Draw Celtic Knotwork: A Practical Handbook” by Andy Sloss. Both books are well worth owning if this is a topic you are interested in. However if you are interested in the learning about the entire range of Celtic art, George Bain’s book is a better choice than that one because it covers more.
